WINTER WISHLIST

Fresh juicy oranges bursting in the mouth and dribbling down
The aroma of nalen gur through the swirls of mist at dawn
The sweet heat of the sun warming our backs at noon
Shelling peas and popping them on lazy afternoons
Dark gooey mysterious plum cakes at and after Christmas
Nahoums' crunchy walnut brownies stashed away in tiffin dabbas
Picnics with badminton racquets and tape-recorders and friends
Fortnight long winter vacations that never seemed to end
Discovering new books at the Kolkata Book Fair
Eating dust and buying books was a day-long affair
Surviving thorns to pick kul that tasted more sour, less sweet
Winter was a warm cuddle with plenty of good things to eat!
